PRESENTATION

THE FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION IS HERE – ARE SOUTH AFRICAN BUSINESSES READY?
The world has changed drastically, but many things have remained the same. Surviving the age of augmentation requires people to create interfaces with new ways of work, play, value creation and living. This talk explores how four young Africans from different parts of the world, will collectively problem solve in 2030.
Musa Kalenga – CEO & Founder, Bridge Labs

PRESENTATION

PLATFORM ECONOMY IN 4IR
The platform economy is transforming how national and global economies function. South African companies that understand how platforms work can use them to gain massive advantages. We tend to think of platforms and ecosystems as a result of the Fourth Industrial Revolution of the early 21st Century. But plenty of companies and industries have employed the power of platforms and ecosystems in the past, with some instructive lessons.Examples of the 20th Century platforms include a newspaper or magazine that brings advertisers and readers together, as well as a shopping mall that aggregates real-estate, facilities management, security and parking, and attracts foot traffic.

These examples have given way to digital platform companies such as Google, Amazon, Facebook, Alibaba and takealot.com. In 2018, five of the first 11 of the Forbes Global Top 100 Companies were digital platform companies, with a combined market cap of US$2,6 trillion.

This presentation explores the Platform economy in 4IR, and if it is suitable for a company to be an ecosystem partner or a platform provider, as both approaches can lead to huge success.

Kirtan Sita – Managing Director: Technology, Accenture

THE FUTURE OF WORKFORCE
Unemployment in South Africa is at an all-time high of 29% while 35% of jobs, almost 5.7 million, are at risk of total automation. They need to ask – how can they help employees develop the skills needed to thrive in the future workplace and seize new careers? Join us as we discuss the crucial issue of the future of South Africa’s workforce.

THE ROAD TO CONNECTIVITY
South Africa’s road to connectivity is littered with potholes. Data, a key input for smart technologies in the fourth industrial revolution, continues to be expensive. Fibre could unlock broader digitalisation, but roll-outs remain slow and concentrated in urban areas. Some industry experts believe the country is still stuck in the third industrial revolution. Where are we when it comes digital infrastructure? In this panel discussion, we’ll explore South Africa’s infrastructure and the road to connectivity.
